Effects of Cyclopentolate on Form Deprivation Myopia in Guinea Pigs

چکیده
Purpose: To investigate the effects of intravitreal injection of cyclopentolate on form deprivation myopia in guinea pigs. Methods: Thirty-five guinea pigs at age of 3 weeks were randomly divided into 5 groups (n = 7 for each group): deprived, deprived plus saline, deprived plus cyclopentolate, normal control, and cyclopentolate group. Form deprivation was only performed in right eyes with translucent membranes for 4 weeks. Physiological saline and cyclopentolate were intravitreally injected into deprived eyes at four-day intervals. All the left eyes remained untreated as group control. Refraction was measured by retinoscopy after cycloplegia. The axial dimensions were measured by A-scan ultrasound. Subsequently, retinal histology was observed by light microscopy. Results: After 4 weeks of treatment, intravitreal injection of cyclopentolate significantly reduced the degree of myopia in the deprived eyes (from −3.92 D to −0.86 D, P < 0.001), and retarded the increase of vitreous chamber depth (from 3.83 ± 0.06 mm to 3.70 ± 0.05 mm, P < 0.001) and axial length (from 8.42 ± 0.04 mm to 8.30 ± 0.05 mm, P < 0.001) in the deprived eyes. Histological examination revealed no evidence of retinal damage of eyes injected with physiological saline or cyclopentolate compared with normal control eyes. Conclusions: Intravitreal administration of cyclopentolate reduces axial elongation of the deprived eyes in guinea pigs. Further investigations are required to identify the optimal dose.

GABAB Receptor Antagonist CGP46381 Inhibits Form-Deprivation Myopia Development in Guinea Pigs
The aim was to investigate the effects of the GABAB receptor antagonist, CGP46381, on form-deprivation myopia (FDM) in guinea pigs. Twenty-four guinea pigs had monocular visual deprivation induced using a diffuser for 11 days (day 14 to 25). The deprived eyes were treated with daily subconjunctival injections (100 μl) of either 2% CGP46381, 0.2% CGP46381, or saline or received no injection. The...
متن کاملRecovery from axial myopia induced by a monocularly deprived facemask in adolescent (7-week-old) guinea pigs
PURPOSE Guinea pigs have been increasingly used as an animal model for experimental myopia. Infant guinea pigs are susceptible to recovery from myopia within 2 weeks of form deprivation. This study investigated whether adolescent guinea pigs are susceptible to recovery from myopia after a longer period of form deprivation. METHOD Twenty-two guinea pigs (age of 3 weeks) were randomly assigned ...

To investigate the effects of collagen cross-linking using glyceraldehyde on the biomechanical properties of the sclera and the axial elongation of form-deprived myopia in the guinea pig. Thirty-six guinea pigs were randomly assigned to four groups: FDM (form-deprived myopia); FDMG (form-deprived myopia treated with glyceraldehyde); FDMS (form-deprived myopia treated with 0.9% isotonic sodium c...

Form deprivation (FD) was induced in 61 guinea pigs with a diffuser worn on one eye. The form-deprived eye elongated and developed myopia within 6 days in animals raised under a 12:12 h light/dark cycle, but not when reared in darkness. After 11 days of FD, the average eye was -6.6 D more myopic and 146 microm longer than its fellow eye. Initially the myopia was mostly from vitreous chamber elo...
